On October 24, 2022 vote for Mayor
Welcome to my campaign website.
I truly believe this election is critical for the residents and visitors of South Bruce Peninsula. The next four years will see more growth than most have seen in a lifetime and we must steer it in a planned and sustainable way.
I've had the privilege of representing you over the last twelve years with the most recent eight years serving as your Mayor. It's been an incredibly busy time as I've worked diligently to advance our town, improve our fiscal position and do everything possible to open unprecedented lines of communication.
You have a substantial investment in our town and the way your Council operates is critical to you. We are responsible for your tax dollars, the goals we set out to achieve as well as your property tax increases. Inflation has hit us all and the Town is no exception. You can usually bank on a 2.5% cost of living increase. We, too, suffer from increases in our service contracts, insurance rates, staffing cost, utilities, fuel, and more. If we don’t keep up with the increases, we would operate at a deficit which is illegal at the municipal level. Each Council determines what you’ll be charged over and above that, and during my last two Council terms as Mayor, we rarely increased your taxes over 3%. We did our best to balance minimal increases with providing the services you rely upon, while bringing new projects and amenities to our town. We have enhanced SBP substantially while deliberately remaining on a shoe- string budget. Yes, we can pour many more of your tax dollars into items such as our road system, but of course you will be charged for that. During each Budget deliberation, we give you the opportunity to tell us what you want and if enough people want us to put more money into our roads or any other item, excepting either a tax increase or a cut to another service, we can definitely do that. We work for you! Operating this town is a balancing act and I firmly believe my Council has done a great job at addressing our community needs while keeping your tax increases to a bare minimum. In fact, our town is stronger financially today than it's ever been while having virtually no debt at all. We have worked hard to attain this status.
Covid sidelined us for half of our Council term and we worked incredibly hard to keep our community safe. We’re so proud of the accomplishments we made despite this two year set-back. My website lists some of these accomplishments plus I’ve included some future goals I feel are important.
We suffered large legal bills in our bid to bring Sauble Beach back to life after losing the north end to blanketing vegetation. We were given the very strong mandate to recover our beach and we did just that. For the first time in years, you can actually walk on the sand all the way to the river. In as much as the cost to bring the beach back was substantial, Council understands the value of Sauble to our town. Through working with our talented treasury department, we were able to manage the costs without increasing your taxes. Through my leadership, we have carefully guided this town in a forward-thinking manner with our eyes clearly focused on the future. I have loved every minute I’ve spent working for you and I’m asking that you allow me to continue. So much has been done in my eight years as Mayor and we still have so much to do. Experience is everything in the Mayor’s position and I'm the only Mayoral candidate with any Council experience at all. Why take chances with our town. You know me, you know how hard I work for you and you know what my experience has garnered for our town. Don’t take unnecessary gambles with our town and your money.
We do have a very vocal group that will stand on their heads to defeat me and my team and they have spent the last two years attacking my Council and our staff through social media. This has become a serious issue across the province and beyond. In fact, many towns and big cities are experiencing a lack of good candidates because no one wants the constant bashing. We have taken a huge amount but our dedication to our town has caused most of my Council members to step up once again. Don’t believe everything you read and if you hear anything that truly worries you, contact me. I’m sure I can dispel any claims through documentation. This is a critical time so please don’t be swayed and make sure you vote. Every single vote will be critical in this election. Please re-elect me and my proven team, Deputy Mayor Jay Kirkland, Councillors Kathy Durst and Terry Bell. Unfortunately, Paul McKenzie is unable to run again which leaves one seat open. Be sure to research your Councillor candidates thoroughly. I’m so proud of my team and our collective experience on Council. We only want the very best for our town so don’t take chances with our future. Stick with the team that delivered so much for our community. For your pocketbook and the well-being of our town, I ask that you give my Council a second mandate to continue the work we are doing for you. I hope you support me in the upcoming election and allow me the opportunity to guide your Council into our very bright future.
It takes strong leadership to make tough decisions and now is the time to make sure you elect the right group. I ask you to re-elect this hard working Mayor with a vision.
Take advantage of my experience, dedication, drive, continuity and leadership. We must continue to create a vibrant community by moving full steam ahead on the projects already in progress. By electing me as your mayor, I will apply my experience, mentor new candidates and form a cohesive team which will consider the needs of ALL South Bruce Peninsula residents. We must keep our eyes clearly focused on the future. We must learn from our past, but we can never look back.
You know what I stand for, you know what I've accomplished and you know what you will continue to experience. Allow me the opportunity to continue the work I've been doing for you. We have such a bright future and the road ahead is glowing!
I look forward to working with you as we continue to build a strong South Bruce Peninsula!
